Whether it’s multi purpose aluminium ladders the office standard or you’ve simply used it forever, Microsoft’s PowerPoint (****; macworld.com/3348) is a terrific tool for presenting your thoughts and ideas to colleagues. During the many years I’ve used PowerPoint, I’ve found a few tips that I go back to again and again. And thanks to the recently released Office 2008 Service Pack 2, now I’ve got some new tricks too.
1. Write It in Word
The single best thing you can do to improve your presentation is to spend more time–way more time–writing it, rather than fiddling with the look of your slides, transitions, fonts, and graphics
Element addition

A new chemical element is finally getting a place at the table–the periodic table, that is! Scientists have confirmed the existence of element 112, the biggest and heaviest element ever detected.
In the periodic table, elements are arranged into rows and columns based on their structure and properties. The table serves as a handy guide for students and scientists.
When a new element is discovered, it can take years for scientists to confirm the finding. Experiments have to be repeated to make sure the find is real. It has been 13 years since element 112 was created in a lab.
The element’s proposed name is copernicium (Cp), after the 16th-century astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus

Wayne Newton is telling fans “Danke schoen” after 50 years in Las Vegas and hinting that his latest run could be his last. But the singer synonymous with Sin City says he’s leaving himself an opening in case he wants to perform after April.
The man known throughout the magic of making up the world as “Mr. Las Vegas” says retirement is possible, but that decision won’t hinge on the success of his new show that opened Wednesday night at the Tropicana Las Vegas hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip.
Instead, he says, it depends on whether his itch to keep working conflicts with his desire to spend more time with his 7-year-old daughter.

NETWORKING Leopard’s Screen Sharing feature lets you view and control the screen of another Mac; it’s handy for performing remote tech support for family and friends. But my experience is that many people use it mainly with computers in the same house or office. For example, I frequently use it to peek in on my desktop Mac from my laptop.
ScreenSharingMenulet aims to make local connections easier by ear infection symptoms providing a menu-bar menu that lists any computers on your local network with Screen Sharing (or Remote Management–aka Apple Remote Desktop) enabled. European Commission Grants Promedior’s PRM-151 Orphan Drug Designation for the Prevention of Scarring Post Glaucoma Filtration Surgery
by admin on Oct.30, 2009, under Uncategorized
Business Wire, Oct 29, 2009
MALVERN, Pa. — Promedior, Inc., a leader in the development of novel therapeutics for
the treatment of fibrotic diseases and tissue remodeling, announced
today that the European Commission has granted Orphan Medicinal Product
Designation to its lead drug candidate PRM-151 for use in the prevention
of scarring post glaucoma filtration surgery. Glaucoma filtration
surgery generally is used to treat patients with advanced glaucoma that
are at high risk for visual loss. Scarring post glaucoma surgery is a
serious complication that causes poor surgical outcomes and may lead to
progressive loss of vision for these high risk patients.
PRM-151(rhSAP) is a recombinant form of human Serum Amyloid P, a highly
conserved natural human serum protein that mediates its anti-fibrotic
activity by targeting the specific cell populations that orchestrate
fibrosis and tissue remodeling, namely monocytes and macrophages.
PRM-151 has demonstrated an outstanding safety profile and robust
preclinical efficacy by reducing fibrosis in multiple tissues, organs,
and disease models. Promedior initiated a Phase 1 clinical trial of
PRM-151 in July 2009 to evaluate the safety, tolerability,
pharmacokinetics and exploratory pharmacodynamics of ascending single
intravenous doses of PRM-151.
The EMEAs orphan medicinal products program is designed to promote the
development of products for the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of
rare, life-threatening or chronically debilitating conditions. Orphan
medicinal product designation provides several incentives to sponsors,
including 10 years of marketing exclusivity, protocol assistance and
scientific advice during product development, and fee reductions or
exemptions for regulatory activities including scientific advice,
applications for marketing authorization, inspections, and renewals.
“The orphan medicinal product designation for PRM-151 reflects the
therapeutic potential of PRM-151 to prevent scarring post glaucoma
filtration surgery and the lack of approved alternative therapies for
this serious surgical complication,” said Dominick Colangelo, Chief
Executive Officer of Promedior. “This designation provides Promedior
significant development and commercial advantages as we continue the
development of this first-in-class therapy for the treatment of diseases
involving scarring and fibrosis in the eye and other organ systems.”
About Glaucoma Filtration Surgery
Glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness in the world, is an
optic neuropathy that affects the optic nerve and leads to progressive
loss of vision. Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is a characteristic
symptom in most types of glaucoma and reduction of elevated IOP is the
current standard of treatment to prevent disease progression. Glaucoma

glaucoma and persistently elevated IOP that are at high risk for visual
loss

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England), Oct 29, 2009
I HAD a call yesterday from my local job centre to tell me that because I have been out of work for six months, I have received the maximum contribution-based allowance my 46 years of employment entitled me to.
I was also told that because my wife who, now aged 60, is receiving pensions amounting to pounds 193, having worked in a care home and paid full insurance contributions, I was not eligible for income-based Jobseekers’ Allowance.
As we have no children and are not entitled to any social security benefits, we find ourselves asking why we paid our income tax and national insurance for all the years we worked.
How is it possible for people to claim thousands of pounds in benefits, when many have not paid a single penny into life insurance quotes the system? JOHN, 61, Gateshead.

Band aids

Flex, Dec, accredited online degree 2009 by Jim Stoppani
Numerous research studies support the notion that bands increase explosive strength and power. You can use bands by themselves, but the best way to realize their benefits is to combine them with free weights. For example, when bench pressing, load the bar with weight and attach strength bands to both ends of the bar. In a study from Ithaca College (New York), athletes used this precise training method of combining bands with free weights on bench presses and squats; another group trained with just free weights. The researchers reported that the athletes adding the bands to free weights increased their strength on bench presses by twice as much and their strength on squats by almost three times more than the athletes training with just free weights. The group adding bands also gained about twice as much muscle mass as the weights-only group
Clean dirty meals: loosen up your diet, but stay on course during the offseason with these meal options

Flex, Nov, 2009 by Darryl Howerton
Cheat meals are bad, right? Not always.
There are plenty of off-limit precontest foods that are perfectly fine during the offseason. Eaten at the right time, cheat meals will not only help fend of f the Diet Devil, but they can also give your metabolism a jump-start and help you break through plateaus.
In simple terms, there are two types of cheat meals: the clean dirty and the dirty dirty. The dirty dirty will take your best-laid plans south real quick. The clean-dirty meal, however, is a way you can veer off from your nutrition plan but still stay on course.
“When we’re doing an offseason diet, we’re adding clean-dirty meals that you can eat without completely derailing progress,” says Hany Rambod, trainer and nutritionist to the champions.
“To put on good, clean, quality muscle mass, I tend to not only increase the amounts of good diet food–rice, oatmeal and potatoes–but also throw in the stuff that’s going to help them think they’re getting a break, which is the dirty stuff.”
Since this is the season to take five from the strict diet, here’s a list of four clean-dirty meals contrasted with four dirty-dirty meals to show you how to be bad while still being good.
APPETIZERS
CLEAN DIRTY
Shrimp cocktail with sauce
Prawn cocktail with horseradish
Lettuce wraps
Lentil soup
Chicken noodle soup
DIRTY DIRTY
Potato skins
Buffalo wings
Egg rolls
Clam chowder
Tortilla soup
ANGUS CHEESEBURGER (CLEAN DIRTY)
This is the gold standard of cheat meals. “There’s just something about being able to grab two pieces of bread with a burger between them and put some ketchup on it,” Rambod says.
CLEAN TIP 1: Search out restaurants that serve Angus beef.
CLEAN TIP 2: Precontest, order the burger with a baked potato, minus the sour cream and butter. If you opt for fries, go with sweet potato fries.
GO DIRTY: In the offseason, go for a fast-food burger, plus fries, up to three times a week, depending on your metabolism.

WENDY’S BACONATOR (DIRTY DIRTY)
More fast-food restaurants, such as Carl’s Jr., now serve Angus beef–but they still kill you with the overload of special condiments. When burger joints make their beef “the old-fashioned (bad) way,” they’re killing you softly two times.
DIRTY WARNING 1: If you go with fast food and get a ground steak or Angus beef burger, scrape off the fat-packing, calorie-intense extras.
DIRTY WARNING 2: Stay away from fries
